Hurricane Season: Electrical Tips & Generator Repairs

It’s officially hurricane season! After Hurricane Matthew hit the Grand Strand of Myrtle Beach last year, we need to be more prepared than in the past. With Hurricane Harvey destroying Texas and Hurricane Irma nearly missing the Carolinas, the possibilities of a massive hurricane affecting us is now greater than ever. So what exactly can we do to prepare besides boarding up our homes and leaving town? Well, Mister Sparky of Myrtle Beach is here to provide from electrical tips and information on what you can do to protect your electrical units in your home.

Unplug, Unplug, Unplug

If you lose power, there’s a good chance that you are not the only one who is experiencing this. When the electricity kicks back on, the risk of a power surge is a whole lot greater as a result. This can lead to damaged electronics and bigger potential for fire hazards. We recommend that you unplug your large appliances once the power goes out to help combat this. We also would advise you to have a whole house power surge protector that can protect your home. Mister Sparky can help you with that if you currently do not have one.

Water, Water Everywhere

It’s pretty simple. Water & electricity do not mix well. If you experience some severe flooding and water levels end up rising high enough to reach electricity panels, wires or any appliance, turn them off or unplug them. By the same token, please do not plug these back in while standing in water. This could be very dangerous.

Always Have A Backup Plan

A backup generator is probably something that you have been considering for years. We highly recommend them. During Hurricane Hugo several years back, some residents in Myrtle Beach were without power for several WEEKS as opposed to a few days during Hurricane Matthew. Backup generators are a great way to keep a few electronic devices running during the storm. Just make sure that you keep them outdoors so that your family doesn’t get trapped inside with the carbon monoxide emissions, which can be deadly. If you are in need of a new generator or need repairs done to your current one, please let Mister Sparky of Myrtle Beach know immediately.

We hope that your family stays same during the next hurricane. If there is anything we can do to help put your mind at ease, please give us a call at 843.213.6610!
